My Anti-Nesting Phenomenon November 12, 2008

Forget making Martha Stewart-inspired cookies or putting together an office organization plan from Real Simple … right now I can barely motivate to wipe the crumbs off the toaster. Typically I’m a house-cleaning, clutter-clearing, gourmet dinner-making fiend! Pre-pregnancy, every night Marc and I would sit down to some delicous plate of grilled salmon and fresh vegetables, followed up by a delightful baked dessert of some sort. Not so anymore.

Despite my best intentions to be the best baby host I can be … my eating has really gone downhill. Instead of preparing our gourmet meals, I find myself picking through the fridge to make a salad for dinner or a bowl of canned soup at lunch. Yogurt and Apples with Peanut Butter have become our after dinner “treats” … and while insanely good for me, I’m a bit appalled at my lack of enthusiasm when it comes to cooking.

And it’s not just cooking, either. The thought of crouching around in the bathroom the scrub the shower or mopping the kitchen floor seems like a colossal waste of time. Maybe it’s because we’re in the process of making a cross-country move and we’re incredibly busy with other things. Maybe when we get to Seattle the foodie in me will reappear, and as we get settled I can start back on my insane dusting habits.

Then again … maybe Anti-Nesting isn’t so bad afterall.

Pop! Goes The Top Button November 6, 2008

I’ve seen a lot of ads lately for those Belly Band things that help women wear their “regular” pants longer into pregnancy (and after delivery) … but I always thought it was kind of silly. Who would want to wear their jeans with their top button undone? Why not just buy new pants (that’s part of the fun right – getting new stuff?).

I get it now.

I currently have two pairs of jeans that fit my growing girth. With both of them hanging in the wind to dry, I was faced with a dilemma this morning: what to put on my bottom half. Too cold to wear the stretchy skirt. Too sloppy to wear yoga pants, again. I went for my old favorite Lucky’s with a low rise. I got ‘em on and buttoned no prob … but after sitting for 10 minutes, the top button came undone (by my own hand … the pressure was not so great to free a riveted button from its home, for crying out loud). Now, I am walking around the house with just the zipper up, constantly pulling up my jeans.

I might have to invest in a Belly Bandafter all.

Baby Bump or Food Baby? November 1, 2008

I’m coming up on 16 weeks of pregnancy and have gained about 7 lbs. My belly has started to “pop” out more than I’m used to, and sucking it in doesn’t seem to do much. Being at that “in-between” phase of showing and not showing is a difficult place to be. My normal clothes still fit, but I feel like I have the ultimate muffin top pooching out, which leads to me think: Is it a baby bump or just a food baby?

When I asked my friend Ali, mother of two, what she thought – she gently pushed on my stomach and confirmed: “It’s hard – which means it’s baby. If you were just fat it would be squishy.” This makes me feel somewhat better, but it’s still hard to believe there’s a little baby in there (the size of a navel orange this week) that’s making my belly feel so big and puffy. Feels more like I just need to fart.
