Things to Make Breast Milk Management Easier While Back at Work August 27, 2009

Filed under: Breastfeeding — happygreenbaby @ 10:58 pm

I’ve known that my start date at work was going to be August 17 since the day after Ryder was born. I’ve had four months to get things organized, and I did all the major stuff: milk has been pumped, nanny has been hired, new 4-day work schedule has been approved.

What I didn’t know was that I would be going on a last-minute trip to Indianapolis for a team meeting my second week back. Not only was it my first night (s) away from Ryder, but my first time pumping out of the house! Here are a few details that would have made pumping on the road a little bit easier.

  • A cute bag for pump carrying. Yes, I have the Medela Pump In Style Shoulder Bag. No, I do not want to carry it to an office for a meeting.
  • For this trip, I brought my small handpump, making a little tote bag even much more needed. Instead, it went in with my makeup bag, wrapped up in a zip top plastic bag. Classy, I know.
  • A less conspicuous insulated bag for carrying milk home. The cooler bag with frozen blue cube that came with the pump doesn’t fit in my laptop bag and it looks weird to stash in the cafeteria fridge. But I did it anyway.
  • Hooter Hider. I’ve refused to buy one of these because I figured a big blanket does the trick to feed the boy in public just fine. It is less manageable to pump and manipulate blanket to appropriate positioning. This would have been super convenient for airport pumping.
  • Pump bra for hands-free pumping in hotel room so I can work and pump at the same time.

My Obsession With Breastmilk Continues August 26, 2009

Filed under: Breastfeeding — happygreenbaby @ 11:47 pm

Everyone was curious how I would handle being away from Ryder for the first time. I have to admit that I was more worried about how I would pump for 2 days than how Ryder would fare without me.

Instead, I was focusing most of my energy on how/when I would be able to pull my hand  pump out of my suitcase and keep the milk a-flowing. On my layovers (both directions), I ended up pumping in the airport bathroom. I know it sounds disgusting, but I was super careful about not touching anything and keeping the parts clean. And when it came down to it – when you’re on a 7 hour flight, you have to get the milk out somehow.

I was super psyched to learn that our new office has a “Wellness Room” – which is quite obviously a mother’s room with a comfy chair, sink and little fridge. I work with such a young company, everyone I inquired with about the room didn’t know what it was for. And honestly, I felt like I was probably the first (and only) person to use it so far.

I missed him, but I wasn’t tearful or terribly upset. Maybe it was because the red eye on Monday night lead straight into a busy day of meetings on Tuesday and dinner out that night. Maybe because I was so tired on Tuesday that I passed out for 12 hours and then woke to a second days of running around so much that I hardly had time to think about anything but work and milk management.

I did realize though, that a crying baby on a flight (even a red eye) doesn’t phase me. I woke up several times on the flight and just thought – poor baby, he’s not getting a wink of sleep! And I promised myself that a red eye will not be an option for Ryder (unless we’re going to Argentina).

All in all, the trip went well and I came home with 40+ oz. of milk that security didn’t even bat an eye at.

My First Pump and Dump August 25, 2009

My first night out without a baby waiting at home and I went for it! Two margaritas and a couple of beers and this lightweight was tispy! When I got back to the hotel from dinner, I determined that my milk was not going to be fit for consumption and had to do my first pump and dump.

If I wasn’t so tired when I flushed the 8 oz. of milk down the sink, I probably would have lamented its loss considerably more.

Even still, I do not forsee doing that again.

Milestone Week August 24, 2009

They say that babies get crabby right before they complete some sort of developmental milestone – this would explain Ryder’s poor sleeping habits all last week while we were on vacation in British Columbia because this week he has been a lean, mean, developing machine!

In the last 10 days or so, Ryder has been using his hands considerably more. It’s almost like over night, he became interested in toys and started reaching for them, and promptly putting them in his mouth! He has even grabbed his pacifier (called a papoo in our house) and put it directly in his mouth! Finally all these cool organic toys we have are coming into play (pun intended).

On Friday he started another trick – sticking his tongue out. Not sure it’s a developmental milestone per se, but it is pretty damn cute.

First Day with Nanny August 21, 2009

Turns out I’m going to Indianapolis on Monday night (red eye flight) for a quick two day meeting with our marketing group. I’m feeling a little worried about leaving our new nanny, Elvira (pronounced El-beera) alone with Ryder right away.

I’ll admit it: part of me thinks she will run away with him. Or that he will freak out being with a stranger and she won’t be able to handle it. So, we spent today getting to know each other … and she’s amazing. Ryder absolutely adores Elvira, even after just a few hours together. She is patient and sweet and gives him more attention than I could possibly ask for!

I know Ryder will be in good hands while I’m gone next week. Oh, and Dad will be here in the evenings to help out, too. :)

Back To Work! August 17, 2009

Today was my first official day back to work. I planned to spend my first week back filtering through the thousands of emails that were surely in my inbox and getting up to speed with my replacement on key accounts. Instead, my day started out with a flurry of emails from my team about a on-site meeting in Bellevue at 10am. Crap. I had not anticpated this. After running around the house trying to get myself in order, meeting was moved to 1pm. Whew.

Because our nanny couldn’t start until next week, dear friend Eliza stepped up and took care of Ryder so I could run about town and make my last minute meetings without worrying who was changing his diapers (although I did come home to find his BumGenius on backward. Note to frenzied moms: they work just fine backward, too).

Despite its stressful beginning, the day leveled out and I even ventured out to dinner with our team that evening, leaving Marc for one of his first evenings alone with the boy. I actually felt like an adult today, wearing high heels, hair straightened and laptop on my shoulder.

Making a Natural Vapor Rub August 7, 2009

Filed under: Natural Health for Baby — happygreenbaby @ 8:21 pm

The babe continues to sniffle and snort his way through the days. Our pediatrician said it’s a “typical summer cold” and we’re doing all the right things: Steam Baths (Ryder sits in his bouncer while I take a steamy hot shower), saline rinse up the nose, booger sucker when appropriate and elevating the mattress on one end by putting a pillow underneath. I’m starting to get desperate to “do more.”

Unfortunately, the cold remedy I recall working the best from my childhood (vapor rub on my chest) is made from petroleum … not something I want to slather on our newborn. Google to the rescue! I found this fantastic recipe for homemade, natural vapor rub. Of course, consult with your own health practitioner before slathering anything (store bought or homemade) on your little tyke.

2 oz Shea Butter
1 oz Almond (Sweet) Oil

1 oz Beeswax Pastilles, White – Unrefined

5 ml (1 tsp) Camphor Essential Oil

2.5 ml (1/2 tsp) Eucalyptus Radiata Essential Oil

1.25 ml (1/4 tsp) Fir Needle(Silver/White) Essential Oil

Phase 1: Melt butters, waxes & oils in a double boiler over low heat until clear and thoroughly combined. Remove from heat & set aside.

Phase 2: In a small glass mixing utensil, combine all essential oils until well-blended. When the mixture from Phase 1 has cooled slightly (almost begins to get a “skin” on top), add the essential oil blend and combine thoroughly.

Phase 3: Pour into small pots like our 2 oz Basic or Heavy Wall Jars. Allow to cool completely before capping.

FYI: Use this product in the same manner as commercial vapor products. Rub on chest, back, bottoms of feet, etc. Avoid eye area. Discontinue use immediately if you experience any irritation.

Goodwill Doesn’t Accept Breastmilk, But I Still Found a Way to Donate Mine August 6, 2009

Filed under: Breastfeeding — happygreenbaby @ 5:55 pm

I got pretty busy pumping breastmilk in May, when we had lots of company to hold and cuddle Ryder while I hooked up to the milking machine. Hence, we now have a freezer full of milk that is about to “expire.” According to all the research I’ve read, frozen breastmilk stays good for 3 months when stored in a regular freezer. While I”m sure this is conservative, I figure why risk it when I’m still producing like a conventional farm heffer.

But what to do with all these bags of organic goodness? I couldn’t bear to see it thrown away. Then I got an email from a friend who whose newborn spent some time in the NICU for breathing concerns (he’s at home now and doing great). She mentioned in her message at the babe was taking in donated breastmilk. Ah-ha!

So I put a call out on my local Yahoo moms group and the response has been wonderful! Several moms who have recently adopted newborns were looking for breastmilk. I was able to give away my May milk to a local family and have contacts should I need to move through the June supply as well. While my May supply ended up only being about 40 oz. I figure that will give a newborn at least a couple days of breastmilk nutrition, and that’s a couple more days than he/she might have otherwise gotten. Every little bit is good for baby!

For those of you with high production, I would defintely recommend looking for opportunities to donate extra milk if you can.

Candidate for World’s Lamest Mom August 3, 2009

Ryder has had a bit of a stuffy nose for a couple weeks. It hadn’t been bothering him, so I didn’t think much of it. On Thursday, it got quite a bit worse and I started a twice daily regimine of saline solution and booger suction. Not the most fun for the boy, but it seemed to help relieve some of the congestion.

Then, we decided to go camping on the Olympic Penninsula for the weekend, to escape the blazing heat of the city. Probably not my brightest moment as a mom yet. We ended up camping in chilly, drizzly weather for the entire weekend. Not to mention we had a fire going the whole time. We kept Ryder cozy in his fleece jacket and Mountain Sprouts recycled fleece hat, and he spent most of his time in the Ergo carrier or sacked out in the van (fortunately we didn’t have to sleep outside!), but upon arriving home yesterday it became apparent that his stuffy nose had gotten much more stuffed and he now has a teeny little cough!

I can’t help but think that if we had stayed home, yes we would have been hot, but at least his cold wouldn’t have gotten worse! Top it off with that I, too, am now stuffy and suffering from a sore throat. Maybe it’s sympathy pains.
