Fabulous Ideas for Recycled Baby Gifts March 15, 2009

The baby shower is long over, but I’m still super excited about the recycled green baby gifts we received that I have to post about it.

  1. Friends and fellow moms, Jen and Ali, assembled a HUGE stash of hooded bath towels, blankies and baby clothes of all styles and colors in sizes 0-9m. It’s the gift that keeps giving! I can’t believe how many awesome things they passed down to our little guy. He definitely will not need clothes for the next several months!
  2. My sister-in-law, Courtney took some of my neices’ old baby blankets and stitched them together in the most adorable (and cozy) baby blanket you’ve ever seen.

The hardest part now is just waiting for him to get here so we can show him all his cool stuff!

Our Happy Green Baby Shower March 4, 2009

Marc and I headed back to Colorado last weekend to celebrate a little baby shower with all our dear family and friends. My sister in law generously hosted the 30+ guests at her house. Typically, parties such as these can be a trash-fest, with paper party supplies, latex balloons and wrapping paper overflowing the trash can by the end of it all. While, I’ll admit, we did have two full trash bags by the end of it all, we also mitigated much of the waste by employing the following eco-friendly baby shower features:

  1. Courtney decorated the food table with satin ribbons leftover from a recent craft project – so she reused and didn’t have to throw it away at the end of the party
  2. We used sugarcane plates and bowls, which are 100% biodegradable, for snacks
  3. Wine and beer was served in compostable corn cups and guests used potato starch cutlery to dig into the organic Chantilly Berry Cake. All of which was sent home to my parents’ industrial composter at AuNaturale Farm in Broken Bow, NE.
  4. We bought organic fruits, veggies and meat wherever possible for the snacks
  5. Fresh flowers decorated tables

I’ll admit it. We did end up buying some balloons to decorate the street corners and in the house. There were 10 in total and I do feel a wee bit guilty about it … but overall our party was a light green success and we had a fabulous time.
