Sleep Training, Morning 2 May 25, 2010

Filed under: Sleeping — happygreenbaby @ 1:54 pm

Last night was rough/easy.

I decided to shut our bedroom door, for the first time in 13 months. Marc runs a fan in our room and which, it turns out, makes our room pretty sound proof. I woke up at 3:48 and heard Ryder crying. I waited 10 minutes and he calmed down. I didn’t know how long he had been crying, which really bummed me out and I laid awake toiling over it for several minutes.

This morning, Ryder was up at 6am and I ran right to him. Poor bugger has a scratchy sounding throat which leads me to believe he was crying for quite awhile and I didn’t hear him! I have been kicking myself all day … I feel so horrible about it.

Tonight, the door will stay open so I can go to him in our “modified Ferber” plan of attack.

Sleep Training, Morning 1 May 24, 2010

Last night went well. Ryder nursed at 10p, woke up at 1am crying and I spent about 30 minutes laying him back in the bed before he went to sleep until 5am. Came to bed with us. Feeling good.

On the flipside, he has a really bad diaper rash that has gone from bad to worse. This morning what was raw and red is now looking more like an open sore. A trip to see the ND at our pediatrician’s office didn’t do much to ease my mind. She diagnosed him with Hand, Foot, Mouth Disease and Fifths Disease before even looking at his bum. Fortunately, I’ve had so many weird interactions with this woman that I didn’t get too worried. Eventually was given an antibiotic ointment to use for a few days. They took a culture to see if it’s strep. He doesn’t seem to be bothered by it, so that’s good.

Oh, and the only reasonable explanation she gave was that perhaps he had eaten too much acidic food. Which is likely since he was on a strawberry bender for two days.

Sleep Training … Again May 23, 2010

The last several nights have been miserable. Ryder is super restless and has spent hours every night (in our bed) tossing and turning, pulling on hair (now BOTH of us get this special treatment) and fussing. The time has come to take drastic measures.

Tonight, I start my modified Ferber again … but I’m going to stick with it. It’s serious this time.

Good Night, Sleep Tight May 22, 2010

Every night, I think, maybe this will be the day Ryder sleeps through the night.

It hasn’t been. But I hold out hope.

Tooth #5 for Cinco de Mayo May 5, 2010

Filed under: Teething — happygreenbaby @ 8:17 pm

Ryder is one of those lucky babies (and hence, I’m the lucky mom) whose new teeth just pop through one day. No excessive slobbering, no days of painful crying, sore gums and gnawing on everything in sight. Just another cute tooth crops up and is ready to get cracking on some crackers.

A funny coincidence is that my niece, Maddy, who is 7 has a loose tooth which happens to be the same one Ryder is getting in (bottom, to the left of middle). I guess the tooth fairy needs hers to give to Ryder.

What is Nursing Bra Retirement Age? April 21, 2010

I think it is time to retire the hideous nursing bras and disgusting nursing tanks I have basically lived in for the last 12 months. Ryder is still nursing two times a day (morning and bedtime) but I think it’s safe to say that the time has come to lift the girls back into position with a proper bustier and say goodbye to the uniboob!!

Things I’ve Learned in the First Year April 15, 2010

1. Laugh More
Remember that everyone is learning! I spent way too much time being critical of Marc for not putting a dirty diaper in the pail or for getting Ryder too excited before bedtime. This is time to share, learn together and have fun as a new family.

2. Buy good (cute) nursing bras and tanks
With any luck, you’ll be nursing for much of the first year which means you will get very, very tired of those ugly beige colored nursing bras. Buy something cute. And refresh your camis regularly! It’s amazing how good nice underthings can make you feel – even when you’re feeling like a cow.

3. Follow your instincts
Yes, you have them. One of the hardest things about being a new mom is learning to trust your instincts. You know what to do.

4. Stockpile breastmilk while you can
You never know if your supply will dry up before you’re ready or a friend may be in need.

5. Don’t put off your personal fitness
Of course, I’m not saying you should be jumping on the treadmill at 2 weeks postpartem, or going against doctors orders. But, for me – the 6 month mark was when the natural weight loss started to significantly slow down. If I had opted to hit the gym just a couple times a week and move toward getting back to even half of my pre-pregnancy workout schedule, I’m pretty certain I would buff and toned right now. Take advantage of the extra calorie burn with breastfeeding in the early months by working out a little bit (and you can still enjoy all the tasty cookies and treats!)

Stand Up, Sit Down, Fight Fight Fight! March 26, 2010

Filed under: Sleeping — happygreenbaby @ 6:02 pm

After a consultation with The Baby Whisperer book , Marc and I have decided it’s time to try sleep training with Ryder again. As much as I love cuddling with him at night and first thing in the morning – it’s going to be best for everyone if we can get him sleeping in his crib. Then, on “special” occasions, he can join us in the big bed.

The Baby Whisperer outlines a particular family whose little guy was standing up in the crib all night long. Bingo! The solution is to just keep laying him back down, no matter how many times he stands up – soothing and comforting him the whole time.

At 9:30p, we put it to the test. Ryder woke up crying. I nursed him (per usual) and put him back in the crib. The standing/laying/crying scenario lasted for a full 90 minutes. He stood up 56 times. Mixed in was a diaper change and two extended cuddling/rocking sessions to calm him down. Eventually he got really tired and stayed laying down on his own. I gave him the paci and Mr. Cozy. He laid awake for several minutes – but was calm. I stayed with him until he fell asleep.

At 1:30 he woke again. Only took 6 times of standing/laying for him to fall back asleep. At 3:30 it was 4 times.

When he woke at 6am, I proclaimed, “we made it!” and gave him a cuddle. He was obviously still tired, so I brought him to bed and we slept until 7:30am.

I call that a successful night! I admit, I “cheated” a little by nursing him a bit at both the 1:30 and 3:30a wake ups. I wanted to see if he would go back to sleep without fighting and standing up. He didn’t. So tonight, I will omit the nighttime feeding and see how that goes.

Tonight, Marc is on deck for an assist and we will do the same thing. This time, hopefully with less wake ups. Though, the Baby Whisperer says it typically takes 3 days to see results … maybe by Sunday night??

Feeling good about this …

Eat Dirt! March 24, 2010

Filed under: Uncategorized — happygreenbaby @ 4:25 pm

It was a goregous spring day in Seattle! Sunny and nearly 70 when I took our old flannel picnic blanket out to the front yard with my boy. I sat Ryder in the grass … which was kind of funny because he just kept rubbing his foot back and forth on the grass, but didn’t want to touch it otherwise. Once I moved him to the blanket, he would crawl all the way to the edge and try to reach for me without getting on the grass. He quickly got over his hesitation with the tickly green stuff when Marc put his Blackberry out for a “carrot.”

The fun really got going when he picked up a clod of dirt and promptly placed it in his mouth. Not delicious, yet he refused to give it up to me. Instead he made sour faces while mashing the muddy mess around in his teeth. A couple gulps of water and he was good to go.
