Zen and the Art of Morning Sickness Maintenance October 25, 2008

I won’t say that I’ve conquered my morning sickness. Not by a long shot. But I’m definitely getting smarter about managing this whole nausea thing. Here are some of my better tips for beating morning sickness:

  1. Eat small snacks frequently. As in every 90 minutes. For example, today’s menu included:
pretzels, yogurt, half of pita with almond butter & jam, pineapple & cantaloupe, peach, other half of pita with melty cheese & veggie sausage, baby carrots, small bag of peanuts, organic microwave popcorn, yogurt, falafel salad with hummus, pudding cup.It seems like a lot of food. And I’m sure I’m not getting my daily requirements of folic acid or protein … but I’m keeping it down and feeling good. Both good things.
  2. Rachel’s Yogurt is the best damn pregnancy snack on the planet. Thick, sweet and tangy, plus easy to nosh laying in bed or running out the door. Plus, one cup provides 8 g protein, 30% calcium and 20% of DHA recommended daily values. If I feel things getting crazy in the belly, a Rachel’s is a quick fix.
  3. Listen to your body. If you’re feeling a rumble in your stomache, don’t think to yourself, “oh, it’s only an hour until dinner, I’ll just wait.” Waiting to feed your tender tummy is never going to result in a good situation. You are going to get sick and not be able to eat dinner anyway. Have a snack. You’ll be hungry again in an hour.
  4. Aforementioned ginger syrup and club soda is a fantastic remedy when the sickness has moved beyond any of the other tactics and I can’t make myself eat a thing.

*Please note: I am not a doctor, nor do I play one on TV. These are some tips that happen to work for this one woman.
